Sailboat race, car show help charities

Westlake Yacht Club will present the ninth annual charity "Sail A Thon" from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 10 on Westlake Lake, Westlake Village.

The event is designed as a 10-hour marathon team race from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. with each team sailing laps around a defined course throughout the day.

It’s open to all sailors and yacht club membership is not required. The course is handicapped so that different classes of boats sail the same distance each lap.

Each boat (team) must raise a minimum of $35 in pledges, for the number of laps they anticipate completing, to be eligible to participate.

The Sail A Thon will have three classes of boats: sabots (ages 17 and under; teams to consist of no more than three sailors, each taking turns sailing the boat); Lasers/C-13s (an unlimited number of sailors on a team, taking turns sailing the boat); and CFJs/C-14.2 (two man crews should have two teams per boat).

In addition to sailing, the second annual "Fun in the Sun" Vintage Car Show will be staged in conjunction with the Sail A Thon, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Landing on Lindero Canyon Road, Westlake Village.

Proceeds from both the sailing event and car show will benefit Casa Pacifica, Create A Smile and Santa Monica Bay Sailing Foundation.

The car show will feature antique and classic cars from 1970 and earlier.

Judging will include Drivers Choice and Peoples Choice trophies. Pre-registration for car show participation is $20 before Aug. 5, otherwise $25.

Other activities include a live auction at 3 p.m. and silent auction (ends 5:30 p.m.).
