Agoura hoops’ coach resigns

Ollie Otis, the varsity girls’ basketball coach at Agoura High School for the past 10 seasons, has announced his resignation.

Otis came to Agoura in 1991 from Channel Islands High School where he coached the girls’ junior varsity for six years.

Although he went 17-11 in each of the last two seasons at Agoura, Otis said he decided to leave for personal and family reasons.

The Chargers made it to the playoffs in five of the last six seasons. Their best showing was 1999-2000 when the girls finished second in the Marmonte League and advanced to the second round of the playoffs. Agoura was 1-11 in conference play the year before.

Last season, the Chargers finished fourth with a 6-6 record.

"The people at the school are great," Otis said. "I would have loved to stayed there if I could make things work with traveling back and forth to where I needed to be."

Otis, who lives in Ventura, said he would keep his job as a maintenance department employee for Las Virgenes Unified School District.

Otis said he hoped to return to the game within a year or two.

The school hasn’t announced a replacement for Otis. Gene Hatton is the girls’ junior varsity coach.
