Reminder about school bus safety A local transportation provider, Durham School Services, encourages parents and teachers to ensure children arrive at school safely by discussing the school bus safety rules listed below with children as they head back to school. School Bus Safety Rules Stay in your seats and keep the noise level down. Keep head, hands and feet inside the bus. Don’t throw objects inside the bus or out the windows. No eating or drinking on the bus. Keep the bus clean. Don’t be destructive. Be courteous. Cooperate with the driver. Stay out of the "Danger Zone"—anywhere within 10 feet of the bus. Always follow the driver’s directions about how to cross the street. Be alert to traffic, look both ways and always walk in front of the bus. Parents are also encouraged to shorten cords and remove knots and toggles from their children’s clothing. These drawstrings can become caught on the bus’s handrails or in between the doors as they are closing, posing a safety risk to a child. Motorists are reminded that the law requires them to stop for school buses when the red lights are flashing—this means students are loading or unloading the vehicles. |
