Calabasans Even the sun couldn’t stay away, as it broke through the cloudy morning Saturday just in time to shine on Calabasas as the city began its 10th anniversary celebration. See photos on page 30. The festivities took place on the land where the new Calabasas civic center will be located, adjacent the Commons. The lot was covered with exhibits and food tents, as well as a petting zoo, a climbing rock wall, pony rides, a puppet show stage, classic cars, a main stage for performances and presentations, and a second stage at the top of the hill where the vintage cars were parked. The celebration began while it was still cloudy at 9 a.m. with a 5K walk/run, followed by an Arthur Murray dance exhibition at 10 a.m. and a performance by the Agoura Harmony Chorus. The sun poked through the clouds by 11 a.m., just in time for the Mayor Janice Lee’s proclamation and presentations from special guests, including state Assemblywoman Fran Pavley and mayors from neighboring cities. Although he didn’t make it in time for the official ceremony, Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslav-sky presented the city with a commendation in the late afternoon. The day continued with both children and adults enjoying the festivities. City Councilman Michael Harrison enjoyed the food with his daughter, Lily, after both worked up an appetite by participating in the race. "It was beautiful, crisp (weather), with some clouds and some sun," he said. Children enjoyed the pony rides and the cute animals in the petting zoo. Woodland Hills funnyman Howie Barnett enthralled the children with his puppet shows and magic tricks. Dressed in medieval garb and a crown, the actor interacted with the children in the audience. "I’ve gotten a really good response," said Barnett. But the day wasn’t just for children. Athletic adults climbed the rock tower and voted on their favorite classic cars which were displayed in spotless condition, some with their hoods up, proudly showing off their mint-condition engines. "This is as much an event for adults as for children," said Calabasas Mayor Pro Tem Lesley Devine. "The classic cars are incredible," she said, describing a "cherry ’67 Mustang" that caught her eye. Calabasas residents Gloria and Marty Bender came to the festivities directly from the Bark Park, with their large, loveable dogs in tow. Gloria Bender said she was having a good time despite the chilly weather. "This is very nice. I’m seeing a lot of neighbors here," she said. Entertainment continued throughout the day, with Latin and Salsa music from the band, Tierra, and acoustic, mellow flamenco music by Roni Benise and his group from Westlake Village. Other performers included RIZE, Victory Mori and Marc Bosserman. The anniversary celebration will continue with an arts and crafts festival on Sat. and Sun., May 5 and 6. That festival will feature more than 130 artists and craft artisans, and children’s art activities, music, food and a beer garden. |
