Pepperdine University to exhibit rare artifacts from Israel

"Rediscovering Caesarea Philippi: The Ancient City of Pan," an exhibition featuring more than 120 artifacts excavated at Banias (ancient Caesarea Philippi or "City of Pan") in northern Israel, will be on display in the mezzanine gallery of the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art on the Pepperdine University campus in Malibu from Feb. 11 through May 4.

Opening day events include a lecture from 3 to 4 p.m. in the school’s Elkins Auditorium and a reception from 4 to 6 p.m.

The exhibition traces the history of this site from the Roman city, through the historic Jewish and early Christian community, to its emergence as an Islamic fort. Marble sculpture, artifacts from the palace of King Herod Agrippa II, jewelry, bronze bowls, and pottery are among the items on exhibit — all shown publicly for the first time.

The museum is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Sundays, and there’s no admission fee. Pepperdine is at 24255 Pacific Coast Highway, off Malibu Canyon Road. For general information, please call (310) 506-4851.
