Westlake football dominates Marmonte League awards Agoura High faired better in the playoffs, but Westlake’s individual talent paid off when it came to recent voting for All-Marmonte League honors. Ryan Foltz, Westlake’s talented cornerback-wide receiver, was named Most Valuable Player of the league as the Warriors won their second straight Marmonte championship. Foltz caught 80 passes for 800 yards, 10 of them for touchdowns, and played a key role on the Warriors’ stingy defensive unit. Westlake’s Michael Brignac won MVP last year. Agoura, which reached the semifinals of the Division IV playoffs for the first time since 1989, placed six players on the All-League first team. Westlake, which advanced to the quarterfinals, had a whopping 11 players named to the first team, including senior linebacker Leo Reed, who was selected as Defensive Player of the Year. Westlake lineman Mark Manning was named Lineman of the Year. Other Warriors making first team all-league are linebackers Devin Lorier and John White, defensive backs Dan Catalano and Phil McKnight, and lineman Joe Lemma, all seniors on defense. Senior lineman Josh Sullivan, senior kicker Travis Swatosh and junior running back Jon Contos made first team offense. Voting is decided each year by Marmonte League coaches. Thousand Oaks quarterback Ben Olson broke Westlake’s lock on the individual honors by earning Offensive Player of the Year. Olson, the second-rated quarterback in the CIF Southern Section, passed for 2,416 yards and 13 touchdowns for Thousand Oaks. The Lancers came in second followed by Royal and Agoura in the Marmonte League standings. Quarterback Chris Denove, who led Agoura’s successful playoff run, passed for 1,975 yards and 16 touchdowns. Denove, who also led the area in punt average, was selected as the First Team utility player. Agoura’s first team representatives include senior running back Brad Altman, senior lineman Justin Edbrooke and junior receiver Geo Martin on offense. Altman led the league with 1,085 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns. Agoura’s first team defensive players are lineman Joe Troiano and defensive back Jordan Grossbart, both seniors. Making first team from Thousand Oaks is junior receiver Dave Anderson, who led the CIF Southern Section with 73 catches for 957 yards. Other first-team Lancers were Emir Puentes, a senior offensive lineman, Chris Boggiano, a senior linebacker and Frank Melia, a senior defensive back. T.O. punter Jesse Ainsworth is the only sophomore on the first team. Newbury Park placed running back Marcus Crawford, lineman Aaron Mansfield, receivers Ray Hawkins and Jabari James on first team offense, and lineman Marcus Black, defensive back Kyle Malinowski and utility player Matt Butcher on first team defense. Staff of the year honors went to Westlake for varsity coaching, Thousand Oaks for sophomore and Agoura, Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks for freshman. |
