T.O. Methodists to celebrate anniversary

United Methodist Church of Thousand Oaks will celebrate its 70th anniversary as a congregation on Sun., Dec. 31.

As the original church in the Conejo, its beginning is traced back to the 1870s when Sunday prayer meetings were held in local ranch houses.

At a New Year’s Eve Watch Night Service in 1930, the congregation voted to organize more formally as the Thousand Oaks Community Church and became legally incorporated in 1932.

It was on Easter Sunday in 1954 that the congregation voted to become a Methodist church. The service was held in their chapel which is now the Masonic temple on Crescent Way.

Pastor Craig Brown said the church continues to look to the future, serving varying age groups and traditions at its current location, 1000 E. Janss Road in Thousand Oaks.
